Village Initiative

KC 360 unites neighbors, local organizations, and public partners to reduce gun violence through a hyper-local approach.

Expanding Local Violence Reduction

The Village Initiative coordinates prevention, intervention, and community services to lower homicide rates. It brings together and coordinates efforts across local violence prevention organizations, neighborhood and community organizers, clergy members, government officials, and the Kansas City Police Department as well as local residents to serve as block captains and event volunteers.

Using community outreach, data collection, and research, KC 360 identified the location of its pilot program: the Santa Fe neighborhood of East Kansas City. Santa Fe’s Village initiative launched in 2022 with a $425,000 collective investment to reduce violent crime by engaging area businesses, residents, and multiple partners. By 2025, the neighborhood saw a 33% reduction in shootings along with a decline in theft, which saved taxpayers $183.4M between 2023 and 2025 through this collaborative work and trust building.

KC 360 has continued to add villages following the success of Santa Fe, expanding access to and collaboration among organizations across the metro.

The Village Initiative is a tremendous opportunity for neighborhood associations to be surrounded by organizations that want to help. When you walk into that room, all eyes are on you, wanting to know what you need. It’s warm, heartfelt, and so many organizations have stepped forward to support what we do. The impact KC Common Good and KC 360 have had on Santa Fe is beyond measure, helping us grow stronger and better serve our community.
